PROJECT 71
Behold a quite rare, first year Montauk!
BOAT HISTORY: We located this all-original 1973 Classic Boston Whaler 16’ Montauk just north of Detroit in Washington, Michigan from the second owner. The original owner occasionally used her on Lake St. Clair and always kept her in a barn west of Detroit. The second owner acquired her out of that barn in 1990. The boat moved to Tennessee in 1992 and back to Michigan in 2007, where she was used on freshwater reservoirs in Tennessee and then on Lakes Huron/St. Clair. This rare, first-year Classic Boston Whaler Montauk checks so many of our “boxes;” she has never seen saltwater, has always been stored inside, has not been modified in any way, and retains all of her original components.
MODEL HISTORY: The Classic Boston Whaler Eastport and the Classic Boston Whaler Nauset wooden center consoles transitioned from standard production to custom order only in 1973. Boston Whaler simultaneously launched the Montauk-I model, boasting a molded fiberglass center console and trademark Boston Whaler Reversible Pilot Seat, adapted to the 16-foot hull. This same year (1973 ) was the first year of the desert tan hull color and the second year of the change from a white glue-on rub rail to a 3-piece rub rail system with black insert.
Other original standard features for the Montauk include stainless steel side railings, Perko bow light, Kainer stainless steel pole stern light, and Schmitt stainless-steel steering wheel.
BOAT OPTIONS: This particular Classic Boston Whaler Montauk is factory-optioned with the forward stainless steel bow railing, fiberglass forward casting deck with three storage compartments and teak covers, Wm J Mills forward shelter, flytop (bimini) and zip in windshield. Additional options include a custom heavy duty canvas boat cover, and Igloo 94 qt marine cooler.
PROPULSION: She is equipped with a highly desirable, very low hour 1992 Yamaha 90hp inline 3-cylinder two-stroke, Precision-Blend, electric start/choke outboard with power tilt/trim and factory Yamaha multi-function tachometer. The 3-cylinder Yamaha 90s are known as reliable motors and highly desirable for the Classic Boston Whaler 16’ hull due to their high power/weight ratio. The two-stroke 90s have a reputation as one of Yamaha’s best outboards ever produced. This Yamaha has been fully serviced and is excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition with zero rust/corrosion and retains glossy original paint.
TRAILER: Rounding out the package is the original Little Dude trailer in excellent condition with new tires, wheels, bearings, and bearing buddies.
TDC MARINE COMMENTS: All-original, strictly freshwater Classic Boston Whaler Montauk models retaining all of their original features, that have not been modified or abused, are extremely difficult to come by. This rare, first-year Montauk will turn heads wherever she goes and, more importantly, will bring endless enjoyment to her next family.
As always, these boats go fast; contact TDC Marine for inquiries about this project, or another Classic Boston Whaler model.
